This Parisian of Belle Époque’s aristocracy totally rocks my world. Having made her first piece of jewelry at the age of five, to go on and design in later years for the 2 biggest fashion houses in the planet, Chanel and Dior Joaillerie, she’s self-taught and seriously cool. Her designs from fairyland are being exclusively handmade at Paris workshops with precious stones of unorthodox form and beauty, sometimes resulting in either Technicolor carnivorous flowers or delicate skulls... / Me encanta esta parisina de aristocracia ‘Belle Époque’, quien diseño su primera joya a la tierna edad de 5 años, para trabajar en venideros años en las dos casas de moda mas grandes de este planeta, Chanel y Dior Joaillerie. De Castellane es autodidacta y seriamente cool, y sus diseños son cuentos de hadas hechos exlusivamente a mano por artesanos de Paris con piedras preciosas de heterodoxa belleza y forma, que a veces resultan en flores carnívoras Technicolor y otras en delicadas calaveras...

WOOLLY HEAVEN ON EARTH... / CIELO DE LANA EN LA TIERRA...

I (heart) wool. I’ll never forget the warm and cosy feeling of my first woolly jumper. I’m a huge fan and champion the stuff any moment, any day. It doesn’t pill, it’s natural, bio-degradable and completely renewable. It’s a active fiber, breathable, multi-climate and with a natural protection against UV. It’s easy to care and resistant. Did you know that it’s able to fold 20,000 times without snapping and keeping its strength to come back to its natural shape afterwards?

This month in Serrano St. (Madrid) the ‘Heaven On Earth’ takes place. It presents a picture of giant clouds, installation of sculptures and trees with winds in both sides of a catwalk walked up and down by ballerinas dressed in wool creations by the Spanish designer Estrella Archs. With it, ‘Wool Week’ has arrived to Madrid, an event of The Campaign for Wool, the English initiative fronted by Prince Charles, which started in London a year ago and has finally visited us after Berlin, Amsterdam, Oslo and Tokyo. Amongst its aims are to encourage wool consumption in the world and to inform us about its multiple benefits and environmental values.

In Plaza Independencia, a flock of cute Merino sheep show off its friendly personality and wonderful properties of its high quality outfit. Merino wool is the finest and greatest type of wool for high quality fabrics commonly used for fashion. No doubt, merino wool is my favourite choice of wool for both knitting and designing, and love its European origins (Spain, 12^th century) and history of worldwide traveling!

Amo la lana. Nunca olvidaré la sensación caliente y agradable de mi primer jersey de lana. Soy una fan incondicional y defiendo la lana sobre todas las cosas. No se hace bolitas, es natural, biodegradable y completamente renovable. Es activa, transpirable, multiclimática y contiene una proteccion natural UV. Ademas es facil de cuidar por su gran resistencia. ¿Sabias que puede ser doblada 20.000 veces sin llegar a romperse y mantiene la fuerza para volver a su tamaño natural?

Este mes en la Calle Serrano (en Madrid) se ha creado “El Cielo en la Tierra”, con nubes gigantes, serie de esculturas y árboles alados a ambos lados de una pasarela en la que caminaban bailarinas con vestidos de lana creados por la diseñadora española Estrella Archs. Así llega a Madrid “La Semana de la Lana”, evento de The Campaign for Wool, la iniciativa inglesa presidida por el Príncipe Carlos, y que tras su inicio en Londres el año pasado, nos ha visitado después de Berlín, Ámsterdam, Oslo y Tokio, con el objetivo fomentar el consumo de lana e informar de sus múltiples beneficios y valores medioambientales.

En la Plaza de la Independencia varias coquetas ovejas Merino pastan y dan ejemplo de lo simpáticas que son y las estupendas propiedades de su modelito de gran calidad, siendo esta de una lana más fina y apta para tejidos de alta calidad destinados a la moda. Sin duda, la lana merino es mi preferida a la hora de tejer y diseñar, y me encanta su procedencia europea (España, s. XII) e historia viajera!

LFW 2011 - DAY 4

Thousands of bloggers round the world would be talking about the gentlemen and lady of fashion today, with Christopher Kane's, Burberry Prorsum's, Giles' and Louise Gray's collections being presented as we speak. All more than fantastic and coming up to our expectations, but I loved this one by Todd Lynn; smart, sober and super sexy.

Miles de blogs alrededor del mundo versarán sobre los caballeros y la señora de la moda hoy, con las colecciones de Christopher Kane, Burberry Prorsum, Giles and Louise Gray presentándose en estos momentos. Todas más que fantásticas y a la altura de nuestras expectativas, pero a mi me ha encantado esta de Todd Lynn; elegante, sobria y super sexy.

LFW 2011 - DAY 2

As autumn draws next year's sunniest collections unveil. This year, I follow London Fashion Week with melancholy and from a far outside. Here an outstanding John Rocha with ruffles, pleats, sheer fabrics and creations in white-black-and-beige, my fav colours at the moment... :)

Llega el otoño y con él se descubren las colecciones para el sol del año que viene. Melancólica, este año sigo la semana de la moda de Londres desde fuera y la distancia. Aquí, un espectacular John Rocha con bolantes, pliegues, trasparencias y creaciones en blanco-negro-y-beige, mis colores favoritos del momento… :)

It's been a while since I took this polaroid, and re-reading Pride & Prejudice the other night has brought it to the front of my mind... Dusky and thick, as seen by Elizabeth from the window of her aunty's horse-drawn coach when approaching Darcy's mansion:
"...as they drove along, watched for the first appearance of Pemberley Woods with some perturbation, and when at length they turned in at the lodge, her spirits were in a high flutter...
...They entered it in one of its lowest points, and drove for some time through a beautiful wood stretching over a wide extend..."

Hace ya un tiempo que tome esta polaroid, y al releer Orgullo & Prejuicio la otra noche me ha venido a la memoria... Al atardecer y frondoso, como lo ve Elizabeth desde la ventana del coche de caballos de su tía, al acercarse de la mansion de Darcy:

JULIA MARGARET CAMERON (1815 –1879)

Her female portraits narrate Arthurian legends and religious scenes in a Pre-Raphaelite style with grace, solitude and a great care for styling; using the natural lighting of her greenhouse studio in the Isle of Wight, where she lived for 15 years, and her family and friends as sitters. These are some of the images that have served me as an inspiration in my latest shoot, where I looked at Darwin's work and the melancholy of the English landscape.


Sus retratos narran leyendas artúricas y escenas religiosas al más puro estilo pre-rafaelita, con elegancia, soledad y un gran cuidado al estilismo; utilizando la luz natural del estudio de su invernadero en la Isla de Wight, donde vivió 15 años, y amenudo retratando a su familia y amigos. Estas son algunas de las imágenes que me han servido de inspiración para mis ultimas fotos, donde he observado la obra de Darwin y la melancolía del paisaje inglés.

...is a sexy pair of letters / ...es un par de letras muy sexy

IN MY MANTELPIECE / EN MI TOCADOR

Finally. I have this cheap print treasured in a very expensive frame. I first came across this image a few years back, when looking through an old Paris Photo catalogue. Its form, composition and light soon struck me, and I could not stop studying its avant-garde movement and morbid sensuality over and over again. I had to have it.

This somehow tragic scene was performed for Koppitz's camera by four dancers-performers of the Vienna State Opera, and it wonderfully takes me to the golden twenties of the art deco, the Gatsby, the silent films and the jazz.

Por fín. Tengo mi copia fotográfica barata atesorada dentro de un marco carísimo. La descubrí hace ya unos años en un viejo catálogo del Paris Photo. Su forma, composición y luz me cautivaron por completo, y me hicieron estudiar una y otra vez su movimiento y sensualidad morbosa. Tenía que poseerla.

De tragedia aparente, esta escena la realizaron cuatro bailarinas de la Opera Vienesa para la cámara de Koppitz, y me transporta maravillosamente a los dorados años veinte, con su art deco, su Gatsby, su cine mudo y su jazz.
